Offshore structural geologic mapping and development of a neotectonic model was performed for PG&E's nuclear Diablo Canyon Power Plant as part of the Long Term Seismic Program.

Approximately 130 square kilometers of high-resolution 3D, 120 line-kilometers of high resolution 2D and 65 line-kilometers of exploration 2D seismic survey were interpreted over a period of 4 months.  The transpressional Hosgri, Point Buchon and Eastern Point Buchon verical strike-slip faults, and several moderately northeast-dipping thrust fault systems are well-expressed in the seismic data and mapped with high confidence continuously across the study area. 

Cross-cutting relationships among strike-slip faults, thrust faults and folds show evidence of undeformed strike-slip faults offsetting the contractional structures, suggesting strike-slip faults are the dominant form of deformation within the study area.

A fault displacement hazard assessment was performed for Anadarko Petroleum’s proposed Afungi LNG facility located in northeastern Mozambique. Onshore geologic, geophysical, and geotechnical site characterization techniques were employed to evaluate the presence and level of activity (rate and magnitude) of potentially active faults within 10 km of the proposed development area.  The project involved the collection, analyses and interpretation of multiple datasets (surficial geologic mapping, onshore and offshore seismic reflection data, subsurface trenching, geologic logging of deep borings, high-resolution elevation data, and numerical age control).

All of the faults within the 10-km radius have been interpreted as gravity-driven extensional growth faults related to collapse of the Rovuma Delta.  The faults are interpreted as having some component of creep, and are non-seismogenic, meaning they are not capable of generating an earthquake having a magnitude greater than ~ M5.5.

A seismic source model, including logic-tree assessment of PSHA input parameters, was developed for northeastern Mozambique to support seismic design of of Anadarko Petroleum’s proposed Afungi LNG Facility.  The source model consists of 3-dimensional areal sources and well-constrained fault sources.  The fault sources are associated with the eastern arm of the East African Rift System, a tectonic plate boundary less than 100 km offshore to the east. Slip rates for the main faults are constrained by recent plate motion and geodetic models describing the relative motions between the Indian and African tectonic plates.

All of the faults within the 10-km radius have been interpreted as being associated with a regional gravitational failure of the Rovuma Delta and root into a subhorizontal detachment at a depth of -3.5 to 4.5 km.  These gravity-driven faults are therefore considered non-seismogenic (i.e. not capable of producing earthquakes having magnitudes greater than ~ M5.5).

Tullow Oil Plc conducted a fault rupture hazard study for Block 1, Block 2 and Block 3A in the Lake Albert region of Uganda.  The purpose of the investigation was to provide an initial screening of the presence and location of potentially active faults, and a deterministic assessment of the relative hazard posed by movement on those faults.   

The investigation used publicly available information such as scientific journals and government publications, satellite imagery and elevation data, and proprietary exploration 2D and 3D seismic reflection data.   Evidence of fault activity in the study area was based on historical seismicity, interpretation of deformed shallow sediments observed on seismic reflection data, and geomorphic and geologic cross-cutting relationships.

The Dolphin Deep Development Geohazard Project consisted of three phases: (1) Data Compilation (including re-processing existing bathymetry and seismic reflection data); (2) Analysis and Interpretation of Existing Data; (3) Data Collection (HR and UHR seismic reflection, HR bathymetry and side-scan sonar data); (4) Analysis and Interpretation of new data; (5) Pipeline Route Optimization.

Structural geologic mapping for the Cerro Corona mine included three objectives: Detailed mapping of the future locations of the keyway and abutments of a planned tailings dam; targeted geologic mapping for hydrogeologic studies; and fault mapping for displacement hazard screening.
